Barnys Concrete Curl
Trying to get a little history of skating on the Outer Banks of NC going. Lets start by saying goodbye to an old freind. The first skatepark on the Outer Banks was Barnys Concrete curl. My guess was it was built around 79 or 80 (If you know email me.) When it was a functioning skatepark it had ramps in the square east section and a free flowing ditch like bowl about head high similar to The Nine Bowl at Stonedge, FL. I moved here in 86 and the place was officially a functioning bumper boat park in the summer. The guys I moved in with had the place on lockdown. They worked out a deal with the owner that if we cleaned it and kept out the riff raff we could skate it all winter while it was dry. This went on for about two years. Eventually they cut out the two inside moguls but the outside walls were still very ridable. The end was when some kid went in and spray painted on the west wall "Gonz Rules!" they did not like graffiti so some steel poles were put in around the walls. Still you could go in and get your carve on. The true end was when they put walk boards all the way around the park and some kind of plumbing deal. This was around 90. The bumper boats have been there every summer since until now. Barnies is now in the landfill or possibly bulkhead material for some soundfront lot. It is leveled. I remember really having a blast in that place. I'll go by and get a shot and I'll post a layout of the place later. If I can get up with Chris Sandowski (OG OBX ripper) I may be able to get some more shots. If you have any shots you wish to share, please email them to me at rob@eastcoastaholic.com. Good bye old freind. R.I.P. 11/03
