Definitely a couple firsts Wed night out of Manteo

Definitely a couple firsts Wed night out of Manteo for a sunset cruise with our good friends @nc_justice @wesley.justice . . With @tischp

1. Launch/Land drone off of moving sailboat #sketchyaf

2. Helmed the same 42 ft boat with Asymmetrical Spinnaker the whole time it was launched and doused , biggest boat I've helmed on.

3. Land drone in the pimento sandwich plate in the cockpit at 3.5 knots. #deathtopimento

I was hesitant to fly off the Scotch Bonnet, mostly based off not being able to slow or stop a 32k lb boat in order to land my main $maker. Catching the drone was a little out of the question because who wants to be responsible for the drone falling into the water or take a prop to the face. Turned out turning up into the wind and slowing down was a wash anyway due to the timing of a motoring catamaran in the channel approaching to starboard.

I watched the boat, water, and wind on our broad reach for about 20 minutes. After realizing just getting it up and out of the way first was 1/2 the battle I decided to give it a go. Landing, went a lil different. Coming in matching the boats speed was a challenge. Pulling it into the starboard side, not so bad. Once back in the centerline of the boat. Landing doesn't happen fast with a drone and as the boat caught up with the landing drone. It made its way to the center window of the cockpit enclosure which was open. Bounced off the frame, took out a tray of sandwiches in the cockpit, and hurt nobody, thank Poseidon. Everyone, including the passing catamaran cheered. Enjoy the footage

Last two days were pedal, stop, eat, medicate, sleep, pedal, repeat. There's nothing hard about rolling down the C & O. We saw moms on ebikes, foldable bikes from retired couples that do this around the world and they stay in Airbnb's, old dudes like us in head to toe Lycra with the latest greatest carbon fiber bikes and clip in pedals, and us two dirty old skateboarders that didn't shower and slept on the ground for four nights.

As we approach great falls into DC it's an all out slaughter of trail use. Hikers are irritated as they get their nature on irritated at bikers on a trail that's famous for biking on, hardcore DC biker nuts getting in their daily miles, and us. Felt like a dying Terminator as we got down to the last few miles. It's fully placebo when you know it's about to be over. You don't want it to end, but it's inevitable and your body is begging to stop...

Took some poking around to find milepost 0 on the river in Georgetown.

Brunswick MD was a cool stop with lots of growth with some cool museum/restoration style sensibility and very biker friendly locals.

Last camp spot was a perfect river spot.

The bike shorts into the wash which should have gone straight into the trash.

Thank you to @tischp for all the support on packing, food, and what not, @dirtysaville for growing up there and planting the seed, and his awesome parents for helping us get going from the top, My old friend Bob Tierno, driving us from Mt Vernon to the beginning and picking us up at the end, Jesse D for the motivation and gear/bags (he did this trip nonstop in 2o hours once!) And Brian over at @manteocyclery for gear and tune-up.

Coming out of Williamsport day three we hit the half way point from C&O canal 98 miles. That's where things got dicey.

Pretty good front rolled through, wind, hard rain, lightning, we holed up in a make shift tarp/ table and let it roll through.

Detour through the country side around a wash through, about five miles after a fresh rain was cool.

There's a section of the Tow path that is like a concrete pier that runs along the cliff wall. This was an amazing mile until it wasn't...

The heavy flood the week before dumped debris and river mud all over this walkway. By the time we got to the gravel path again the mix of river mud/pea gravel and new rain turned about two-three miles of concrete mush. The bikes were coated in crushed gravel in every crevice, . Heavy, can't push, if not for @dirtysaville circling back to get my bike out we would be still there.

Completely drained with bikes that would not peddle we limped to a boat ramp and preceded to run a bike wash with water bottles and river water.

Every camp site we came to over the next 12 miles was flooded out. We got down camping on the trail about 9:30 at night.

Next morning four miles in Shepherdtown wv we got a huge breakfast.

Good camping couple miles from Hancock MD.

After a few miles we rode uphill a bit and walked around Ft Fredrick.

Good riding into Williamsport, uphill there to the c&o bar and grill. Ate good and the bartender will wash, ice, and fill your water bottles.

Got about 10-15 miles from Williamsport into a huge front. Hard rains for about an hour, hunkered down under the worst make shift tarp over a picnic table.

Things went a lil south after that storm, more next post.

We rolled on down the Allegheny trail into Cumberl

We rolled on down the Allegheny trail into Cumberland, a total of 24 miles, pretty much downhill the entire time. After a bite to eat in @dirtysaville old stomping grounds, we pushed on for another 22 miles. Last five miles was not a pleasant site... Decent run considering our weight. Close to 60+ lbs on each bike. First night camping lifted spirits. We pushed on...

Forgot this tunnel's name, but it was pretty cool, looking forward to the Pawpaw tunnel...

This view is half way up the detour around Pawpaw tunnel. The tunnel was closed and was to be a highlight of the day. The detour was 1.5 miles with 3/4 going uphill at 7%grade 3/3 going down in the mud. 365 ft in elevation pushing bikes loaded straight uphill.

A little whooped we made Hancock MD , bonked out and starved. After striking a camp several miles down the trail from town we made a total of 38 disappointing miles.

Piecing together what we are up to this weekend. A Couple months ago I sent @dirtysaville a text and mentioned doing the C&0 trail and do some bike camping.

Basically bringing everything you need to eat and sleep on your bike for 200 miles from Cumberland MD to Washington DC. ( we put in a little farther than Cumberland to ride the Allegheny trail for 24 miles) lots of bike prep, leg prep, and some help from Manteo Cyclery and Jesse Davis. We took off.

drive bikes to DC/mt Vernon VA to get an old friend to take us to Cumberland.

spend some time with Dirtys parents who flatten us up, and drive us up past frostburg and into Pa.
